It seems ten times worse when a celeb couple breaks up right before they tie the knot.
Being in a couple is hard enough these days, but being a celebrity couple where your every move is basically under complete and utter observation for the world to see? Talk about pressure. Whenever one of our favorite celebrity couples break up in real life, a part of us is sad because we feel like we knew them personally (thanks to the abundance of social media we have at our fingertips). Moreover, it seems ten times worse when a celeb couple breaks up RIGHT BEFORE they tie the knot.
2017-early 2018 brought us a bunch of celeb break-ups of the worst kind: we had to cry through a Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan split, a Chris Pratt and Anna Farris falling out, a Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux divorce, and many, many more. But what about the couple who never made it to the altar? What happens when a celeb couple breaks up before there’s an iron-clad prenuptial in place? Specifically, what happens to the pre-wedding bling?
Yes, we’re talking about the engagement ring.
Sometimes, celebs draw up contracts when it comes to the engagement ring (usually, if the rock is over a certain amount of money) on who gets to keep it after a couple splits.
Here are 15 celeb couples who happened to keep a firm hold on the ring even though the relationship dissolved.
15. “I’m Keeping That Rock!” – Mariah Carey and James Packer
Mariah Carey is known to be a diva in every sense of the word, but when it comes to her engagement to Australian businessman James Packer, she even seemed to out-diva herself. The duo met in 2014 and he ended up popping the question with a 35-carat diamond engagement ring that cost less than $10 million dollars in 2016.
“It’s so heavy, I can’t even lift my arm up!”, Carey joked about the ring.
But a few months later, the couple ended up splitting and that’s when things took an ugly turn for the bitter. “I was at a low point in my personal life,” Packer told The Australian. “She was kind, exciting, and is a woman of substance. But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me.” Carey had a few conditions after the split: one that included a large lump sum of money and the ring itself. Carey had laid out conditions and settled for in between $5-$10 million from Packer (what she had wanted for moving out to Los Angeles to be with him) that he ended up meeting in the end. Thing is, she kept the ring on her finger AFTER the split, and even wore it to public events.
14. When The Feds Happen To Interfere In Young Love – Anne Hathaway and Raffaello Follieri
Well, THAT was an awkward breakup. Given, actress Anne Hathaway was only a mere 21-years-old when she fell head over heels in love with businessman Raffaello Follieri, who apparently swept the Hollywood starlet off her feet. However, the fairytale illusion was shattered in 2008 after Follieri pleaded guilty to wire fraud, money-laundering, and conspiracy. Hathaway left Follieri two years later. “I want only the best for this person,” Follieri said of his ex-fiancée after he was released from jail. “She was very sweet to me. We had, I think, a very nice relationship. I don’t have anything bad to say.” The disgraced businessman went on to say that he believes Anne knew nothing of his shady business deals even though he spent extravagant amounts on her. “I don’t think she knew anything because we didn’t have a business conversation. I was discussing the business and what – in general, but not anything specific. I didn’t have, believe me, any thought that something would go wrong.” Did Anne keep that engagement ring he gave her? Well… it was actually sold off by a federal judge in order to pay the victims of Follieri’s nefarious activities (which actually including buying Catholic Churches for profit). I mean, ouch!
13. Broke, But Not Ringless – Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson
Just when you think that two people are perfect for each other, they have to go let things get in the way of the relationship which causes them to split. Let’s take artist Kid Rock and actress Pamela Anderson, who apparently split up over “not so little things” like money, family, control, and, well, secrets. First of all, Kid went on The Today Show and talked about the reasons why the duo split.
“The worst thing in life is to be famous without money,” Kid said.
Apparently, Kid had a majority of the money in the relationship while Anderson had done without for a long while. When she moved into his $12 million Malibu beach house, she started spending a majority of his money in order to fix it up. She also didn’t want to sign a prenuptial agreement (which is why they apparently broke up in the first place), and Kid eventually agreed to that (why??!) which is probably why she got to keep the $500,000 engagement ring the rocker gave her. After Anderson became engaged to Rick Salomon in 2007, Kid went to the press and said that he wanted the ring back. We’re not totally sure if he ever did get the ring back, but one has to wonder.
12. Kardashian Bling – Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
Ooo, boy – we know this particular couple actually made it to the altar, but since it didn’t get much further than that, we thought it was noteworthy. Everyone pretty much knows the “love” story of reality super-star Kim Kardashian and NBA player Kris Humphries: they met, had a strange courtship, became engaged, and married for only a couple months (somewhere in the middle there she lost her diamond earring in the ocean and big sister Kourtney Kardashian famously roasted her). If you were or are a fan of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, you know the infamous, yet short-lived relationship well. Including what happened with that massive engagement rock after the fact. For a while, it was believed that Kim actually kept the ring (it was in the prenuptial agreement) because SHE was the one who bought it. Thing is, she actually DID keep it for a period of time before giving it back to him silently. “Kim has been waiting for the day he would auction it,” an insider told Us Magazine. “Everyone always asked what Kim did with the ring – She silently gave it back over a year ago! And Kris waited until the divorce was final to sell it.” It sold at auction for $620,000.
11. A Tragic Love Story – Nicole Richie and DJ AM
The love story of Nicole Richie and the late DJ AM was a tragic one until the very end. Sure, they were no Romeo and Juliet, but it still was sad at the end of their love story. Both the reality star and the DJ (whose real name was Adam Goldstein) had been on-again-off-again for years (as far back as 2004) and the duo had announced their engagement to each other in February of 2005, only to have it called off in December of that year. But, alas, in 2006, the couple was found to be on-again (though Richie wasn’t wearing her engagement ring around town at the time). After the couple had broken up, Richie went through a dramatic weight loss that she attributed to her break-up.
“I get really stressed out,” the reality star told People magazine.
“And I do lose my appetite.” They had split again, this time for good, until his death in 2009. However, the two did remain good friends and it was said that she kept the ring after the split because the duo was close. She was reportedly devastated after his death, which makes sense since the couple were good friends both before and after the relationship and she had helped him through some hard times in his life.
10. The Love That Won’t Die – Sienna Miller and Jude Law
When it comes to failed relationships, this one has to go into the Hollywood Hall of Fame. Jude Law met and fell in love with actress Sienna Miller when he was still married to wife Sadie Frost and they were about ready to tie the knot in 2004 when Law openly admitted to cheating on Miller with his nanny. Even though they tried to work out their differences, both ended up splitting in 2006. They eventually tried to give it a second go-around in 2009 but broke up in 2011. “I like intelligence,” Miller told Vanity Fair in 2016. “It’s the only thing I’ve ever been attracted to. People who aren’t clever enough fall by the wayside. They’re a motley crew, my ex-boyfriends, if you lined them up, it would be strange. I don’t care about that [looks], but you know, within limits… Someone staggeringly beautiful and thick is totally ugly to me. It sounds silly but I like bookish academics who are slightly odd, and borderline, you know, on the spectrum.” Though we have to admit, Law isn’t too hard on the eyes. He ended up giving her a sapphire-diamond ring (worth well into six figures) in 2010 before they broke up again in 2011, which she did end up keeping.
9. Second Time Wasn’t A Charm – Robin Wright and Ben Foster
According to House of Cards actress Robin Wright, she really didn’t come alive until after her divorce from Sean Penn – when she became engaged with actor Ben Foster. “I was pregnant and ostensibly married at 24,” the actress told Vanity Fair a couple years back before their split. “You hear people say how they have ‘arrived,’ but it was just always there, waiting to come out. For me, it just took a long time. I’m 48. I’m finally a person. I think I’m finally ready.” Both she and Foster (who was 34-years old at the time) met on the set of Rampart in 2011 and they became engaged in January 2015 after a small break-up. They were engaged both times, and they parted both times, unfortunately. “She got swept up in the engagement last Christmas, but then their schedule got crazy and she realized it wasn’t the right decision,” an insider told US magazine.
The ring that Ben gave her (twice) was a low-key and delicate looking sparkler, so who ended up with the ring in the end?
She reportedly stopped wearing it in public after the split while Ben started dating (and became engaged to) Orange is the New Black star Laura Prepon, so rumor has it that Wright did end up allegedly keeping the ring, but no word on if she sold it off or keeps it in a box in a hidden-away drawer somewhere.
8. That Was One Quiet Decade – Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen
Talk about chucking an entire decade into the wind and watching it float away. This was the case for super cuties Rachel Bilson (of The O.C. fame) and Hayden Christensen who were together for a better part of a decade. “She’s full-time back in L.A. He’s in Toronto,” an insider told UsWeekly. “They’ve been on the outs for a couple of months.” The duo has apparently been on and off for years and has a young daughter together. “I’ve always been a big romantic,” Bilson told Cosmopolitan UK a while back. “And I look forward to all those things. I’ve been in a relationship for six years and I’m happy.” They had broken up once before and then quietly got back together before having a daughter in 2014 before officially breaking up for good a couple years later. The duo was known for staying out of the spotlight for the most part and keeping their private life private. Even their break-up was extremely private and the two never really spoke about it. So what about that ring? It was the ring from the first time he proposed, which was a two-carat solitaire worth around $30,000 (something she actually rarely wore in public), which she possibly did end up keeping according to insiders.
7. Still Crazy For Each Other – Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
Now, we’re going to say it was probably wise for this particular couple to up and keep the engagement ring. Actress/singer Miley Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth have always had a noteworthy, on-again, off-again relationship over the years. But for some odd reason, fans just believed it would work out in the end and the two would find their way back to each other. Even though they were engaged for a while before they broke it off for a little bit, this time around feels different for the pair.
“They have been in love for almost nine years but the timing has never been right up until now,” an insider told ET Online.
“Their massive careers, their ages and their families’ input has kept them from getting married.” As for their wedding plans this time, Miley is keeping it original. “Miley has come up with all sorts of different wedding plans. She’s always creative and thinking of new ideas that will make her experience different, but recently she decided she would make it simple,” the insider reveals. Good thing she kept the engagement ring. In other news, Liam ALSO sports a promise ring on his ring finger as well. #RelationshipGoals
6. From Paris To Paris – Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis
Sometimes in life, it’s the person who comes under fire the most who ends up being the most kind-hearted. This is actually the case with reality star and billionaire (or is it trillionaire?) heiress Paris Hilton. When she was engaged to then-fiancé Paris Latsis years back, he proposed to her with a 24-carat diamond worth $4.7 million. Now, we all know the history of the couple, who split up amicably in 2005. And what did she end up doing with the ring? Well, she auctioned off for half of what was paid for the ring, and then the money was donated to victims of Hurricane Katrina. It’s noted that Paris (girl Paris) has been engaged a whopping three times in her young life and currently, she just said “Yes!” to current boyfriend, Chris Zylka, who proposed to her on top of a ski resort in Aspen, Colorado on New Year’s day of this year. “I said Yas! So happy & excited to be engaged to the love of my life,” Hilton said in an Instagram post under a picture of Chris proposing to the heiress. “My best friend & soulmate. Perfect for me in every way. So dedicated, loyal, loving & kindhearted. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world! You are my dream come true! Thank you for showing me that fairytales do exist.”
5. Pamela Anderson… AGAIN? (This Time With Pokerplayer Rick Salomon)
Pamela Anderson just apparently has a thing for keeping rings instead of giving them back. First, it was with finance Kid Rock, and then it was with her husband of only six months, Rick Salomon, a professional poker player (yes, yes, we know they also made it to the altar, but it’s still noteworthy). The beautiful ring was a 3.24-carat round brilliant cut diamond and she said that all the proceeds from the ring would go to her non-profit charity, The Pamela Anderson Foundation.
“I hope this very special Tiffany engagement ring can bring joy to someone while I put the donation to great use,” Anderson told People magazine.
“One hundred percent of funds raised will go to The Pamela Anderson Foundation and this will mark the launching of my foundation’s new eBay charity store, where there will be signed books and memorabilia.” The duo married after a whirlwind romance but ended up having the marriage annulled two months after. And then, later on, the two actually REMARRIED again, only to officially separate a few months after that. Anderson had cited “irreconcilable differences”. At least the money made from the ring (which opening bid started at $100,000) went to a very good cause.
4. Diamonds (And Some Loves) Are Forever – Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri
Their engagement may have ended a few years ago, but that doesn’t stop rumors from flying around recently about exes Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri. After she performed in Atlanta last December, she reportedly met up with music producer Jermaine Dupri, who was her long-lost ex-fiancé, at a local restaurant. “They were in a private area at her exclusive tour wrap party,” an insider informed People magazine. The duo was “cuddled up in a private booth holding hands.” The duo dated and was said to be engaged back in 2009 before going through a somewhat bad breakup. “They didn’t speak for years until about a year ago,” another insider said. “He felt like he had wronged her. But they reconnected and he was there for her as a friend while she was going through her messy breakup.” That messy breakup was the split from her husband, Qatari businessman Wissam Al Mana last year. The two had a son together (Janet’s first) and the two are tangled up in a custody battle over the boy. The ring in question that Janet was spotted wearing before the Dupri split was a 20-carat ring that Janet appears to have allegedly kept. So it makes sense if they actually do start dating again and the ring suddenly reappears back on Janet’s finger.
3. JLo Cares Nothing For The Rocks That She Got – Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, and Marc Anthony
Singer/actress Jennifer Lopez has always appeared to be lucky in the love department. She had relationships with some very handsome men in her past, including Ben Affleck and Marc Anthony. Currently, she’s with former MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez. You can see their love flaunted all over Instagram (and, apparently, her children adore him) and all over the covers of some magazines. Now while we think she’s been lucky in the love department, she may say otherwise. In her lifetime she’s been given some gorgeous rings with some pretty hefty price tags attached to them. When she became engaged to Affleck (remember the entire Bennifer craze? You know, BEFORE he got with another famous Jennifer?), he proposed to her with a $1.5 million dollar Harry Winston diamond that she flaunted all over the red carpet.
After their relationship ended, she sold the ring back to the jeweler.
And when it came to giving back the engagement ring that hubby Marc Anthony gave her? That was a no-go. She ended up having a “fire-sale” and sold off all the gifts he gave her during their marriage, including the ring. Apparently, she wanted to start fresh and got rid of everything from the ring to photos of the two.
2. The Revenge Auction Heard Around The World -Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods
Once upon a time, the only thing attached to the name Tiger Woods was “elite”. He was one of the highest paid athletes in the entire world and a professional golfer that no one could really measure up to. He was a golf child prodigy of sorts who went professional by the time he was 20-years old. Back in 2003, he became engaged to Swedish model Elin Nordegren and the two had a picture-perfect relationship that everyone admired. They ended up getting married in 2004 and had two children. And then, all of a sudden, their fairytale marriage collapsed in a very public way. Apparently, Woods had had affairs with numerous women all over the world, but all it took was one to come out in public. He apologized numerous times in the press, but his marriage was over and for a short time, his career appeared over as well. The pair (yes, we know that they two were married) had a $100 million divorce settlement and all that was left was the ring. So, like any other famous woman scorned, Elin decided to auction off the ring along with other jewelry that Tiger had given her during their marriage.
1. Failed Young Love – Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow
We will all never really forget the look on Brad Pitt’s face at the end of the film Seven when he discovered the fate of his beautiful young wife who was played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Back then, they seemed like the absolute perfect golden Hollywood couple (pre- Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, and pre-Chris Martin), but the engagement didn’t seem to last long. “I definitely fell in love with him,” she told Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show back in 2015 when recalling her relationship with Pitt. “He was so gorgeous and sweet. I mean, he was Brad Pitt!” She went on to talk about what had happened after they became engaged to be married.
“I was such a kid, I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my [rear]. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22-years-old… I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.”
If they run into each other, they’re friendly, but they don’t go out of their way to hang out with each other these days. It was rumored that it was Brad who was the one who called off the wedding, which devastated Paltrow, which is why it was assumed that she was the one who ultimately ended up holding on to the engagement ring. “He’s commitment-shy,” an insider close with Pitt told People magazine. “He needs to figure out what he wants.” Poor young Gwyneth.
